Bonnie Lebesch’s Holiday Studio Sale

I will also be a part of the Bonnie Lebesch’s Holiday Studio Sale. Bonnie has invited four artists to exhibit with her at her home studio, Shana Salaff, Laurie Beth Zuckerman, Lili Francuz and myself. It will be a nice variety of work.

I hope to see you in Ft. Collins, Colorado on December 1

 120 Mathews St. 11 – 4 PM.

The Duck Barn is in full swing now!
I have been invited to the Duck Barn Artisans Holiday Sale in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The Duck Barn has been the pinnacle Holiday Art sale for Cheyenne the last 30 years. They feature dozens of local artists and I’m just delighted to be asked to part of the show! The Duck Barn’s sale runs for three weeks, so you’ll have plenty of time to see the show.

The Duck Barn will run from November 23 to December 15.
10 AM to 5 PM Monday – Saturday, in downtown Cheyenne
315 West Lincolnway.

Each year a group of local artists, “the Ducks,” gather their items in a retail location here in town.  The Ducks invite approximately 30 artists to show with them, so it is a super nice variety of art and Christmas decorations.

Here are a few pictures from The Duck Barn Shop.

The Among Friends Art Show and Sale is now over for the year!!  We are so grateful to everyone who came out and support us.  This was our most successful show, to date.  We had tons and tons visitors and lots of my pots have new homes.  We are thankful for the fans who come out every year and for all the new customers who found us this year.  Thank you for sponsoring creativity and community, and supporting local artists by buying and giving handmade.  cnorman-pic-009

Also a huge shout out to everyone who bought raffle tickets for my salt and pepper shakers, we raised close to $500 dollars.  That’s a lot of dough for six tickets for 5 bucks.  Thank you to everyone who contributed!    The winner of the raffle is Susan Moldenhauer.

One elderly gentleman came wondering and hovered over the refreshments and when I noticed he wasn’t eating anything I asked if I could help him.  He turned and grabbed my hand and said, “I’m here to help you,” and handed us $50 dollars for Heather.  Heather was really moved and humbled by everyone’s generosity.  We are hoping for her full recovery.

We hope to see everyone again next year!!

CLAY FOR THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

I am selling raffle tickets for a pair of my black and white salt and pepper shakers ($150) with the quote, “Add Spice to Your Conversation.”  Proceeds will go to my friend Heather Blakely Voyles who is battling breast cancer.  Heather is only 32 and just had a double mastectomy, hysterectomy, and her biopsy came back positive for malignant lymph nodes. Heather is a second grade teacher and will be missing the rest of the school year.

$1.33 for one ticket and $5.45 for six tickets.

The weird prices for the raffle tickets are to offset the Paypal charges, so when I give Heather the proceeds of the raffle she will won’t have to share with Paypal. The drawing will Dec. 11 at the end of our Among Friend’s Art Show and Sale.  If you are buying a Paypal ticket I will fill out a raffle ticket for you for the physical drawing.  I will email the winner on December 12.

Among Friends Part 3 – Jennifer Rife

Jennifer Rife Among Friends Guest Artist

Check out Jennifer’s Artist page on Facebook.

I grew up in rural southeastern Colorado in a family of do-it-yourselfers who fostered creativity and provided unlimited materials.   My favorite materials were scraps from mom’s sewing and leather projects and the dirt in the backyard.  These materials are now the basis of my work in the forms of hand-dyed silk noil, leather sides and clay.

As a result of renovation projects on my 86-year-old home in Cheyenne, leftover hardware and plumbing parts have also found their way into my pieces.  Hardware stores double as art supply stores for me and I find all sorts of materials in their aisles.  Pine needles and other natural materials in my garden also creep into my work and provide continual inspiration.

My collegiate studies in art history have influenced me greatly over the years.  All those memorized images and subsequent trips to art museums and iconic sites are burned into my memory.  Some have influenced me more than others, and I find myself most attracted to ancient, tribal and abstract expressions, and color, color, color!

I’m also attracted to stories – in any medium: they contain memories and experiences.  Each of my coiled sculptures and vessels contains a story, though it is not a literal telling. The large sides of leather I use are marred by scars, causing me to consider the story behind each mark.  They make me think of my own skin and my scars that hold stories.

Through the materials, colors and shapes I use, I aim to stir each person who encounters my work and to evoke their own memories and stories.

This one is in my collection!!

Georgia Roswell

Check out Georgia’s website and her blog.

Prevent Stretching, Baste Your Curves”, is about connections between my mother, myself and my daughter. My mother taught me how to sew and was always giving me pertinent advice which sometimes I followed and sometimes I didn’t! My mother and I made many trips to fabric stores and I have spent numerous hours running my hands over yards of beautiful fabrics. Consequently I am deeply influenced by pattern and texture.  My mother has since passed away but the skills are still being passed down through my daughter and I. The dressmaking pattern I choose is a McCalls Easy pattern from 1956, the year I was born. It makes me laugh to see what was considered and “easy” sewing project in the 50′s!

Georgia’s Artist’s Statement

I come from a family that appreciates the value, craftsmanship and personal expression of a thing beautifully made. My formal degree is in painting and drawing but my love of art began very early under the tutelage of my Mother. Her curiosity and mastery of the “woman’s arts”, instilled in me a love for,“The irregular and intimate quality of things made entirely by the human hand.” *

The world around me is my inspiration. Ideas might spring from the natural world, like looking closely at the details of a shell or seeing the patterns of the land from the window of an airplane. It could be from the world of ideas, books or museums, where I am inspired by other cultures, thoughts and artists.

My years as an artist have taken me through many different media, each one buliding upon the next and strengthen my voice as an artist. Art is the language I use to translate the world around me.  Combining nontraditional materials  in unusual ways, with a heavy emphasis on pattern, color and texture, I create a vibrant visual vocabulary. My goal is to present work that inspires an interesting and lively conversation.

Among Friends Art Show and Sale: “The Artists Part 1″

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Chad Blakely

Chad has been a long time friend of mine.  He has taught art across the hall from me for 11 years.  He and I teach the advanced Junior High Art classes.  He teaches 2-D classes and I teach the 3-D classes.  This year he is reproducing all his paintings into greeting cards, his original paintings will also be for sale and in the show.

 Check out Chad’s blog here.

This year most of Chad Blakely’s artwork is “PINK” in honor of his sister who is battling breast cancer, and he is donating all his proceeds to help Heather with her medical bills and missing so much work.  She is a second grade teacher and is taking the rest of year off for all her medical procedures.

I will be raffling off one of my bowls for Heather as well.  I haven’t decided which one yet.  Check back to buy a raffle ticket.

I was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming, where I started drawing at the age of 3 and the guidance of my mom. She taught me to draw Popeye, and I’ve been drawing cartoons ever since. I graduated from UW in 1999 and started teaching art in Cheyenne that same year.  As an illustrator I have self published four comic books and done inking for various companies. I am currently working on an original graphic novel that I hope to have published by summer 2011. I currently live in Cheyenne with my wife and two kids.

Kelley Jones

I met Kelley when she lived in Cheyenne, but unfortunately she moved to Colorado.  I love Kelley’s work.  I traded her for one sculpture last year, and it is a favorite of everyone who comes to my house.

Check out Kelley’s website.

My work is inspired by a childhood of low-tech toys, comic books and cartoons.  My later years of studying art in college, however, did not lead me to my dream job of being a cartoonist.  Time passed, kids were raised, and alternative careers explored. Eventually, my guys (a sort of 3-D cartoon character actually) were created. I now have a home studio in Eaton, CO, where I live with my husband and the lords of the house: the dogs.
Each piece is hand sculpted, painted, and sealed. The captions are original, intended to be humorous. Kinetic features add another level of whimsy.

 Heather Fetsco

Heather Fetsco lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming with her Husband, Dan and their Son, Jackson.  She has been creating jewelry since 2001, when she knew what she wanted for her Wedding, but just couldn’t find it.  She uses only natural materials like glass, semi-precious stones, metal and even rocks – no plastic or resin.  Many of her pieces are one-of-a-kind, but she also enjoys doing custom sets for Weddings or other special gifts and events.  Her styles range from classic, to thoroughly modern.
