How did you become an artist?

When developing ideas for new pieces I always look at my most recent work. Using this work as a reference point allows me to improve upon an idea or push an idea further by learning from successes and failures. To test new ideas I often sketch in clay, making pieces that will be sacrificed to experiment with a new form. I also make drawings, but have found there is little substitute for practicing with the actual material.

It’s hard to say; I can’t think of a specific event that triggered it. I have always been shy. The idea of art making as an alternate form of communication was attractive to me. I like the notion that I can make something with my hands that can communicate in a much more nuanced, powerful and multifaceted way than either the spoken or written word. What or who inspires you?

My sister and my mother. My sister is a writer and has recently completed her first novel. The amount of perseverance, dedication and time spent on this single, intensive project is awe inspiring.

How do you maintain a healthy work and life balance?

It is a constant challenge, but I try to take things day by day. My husband is very supportive of my art and teaching practices and also helps me maintain a balance; we enjoy outdoor activities together including cross country skiing, hiking and bird watching.

What advice can you give aspiring artists struggling to find their own voice and look?

Gaining a strong technical background and exposure to contemporary and historical artists can give you a good foundation, however I think the best thing to do is look to your own passions, even if they have nothing to do with art. This will help you make the most honest, personal work.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I started making pottery when I was a kid, but only realized it was intensely complex and engaging after I had finished college and started working. For me style is an outgrowth of self-reflection, rather than something you decide upon. I wanted for a time to make rustic crusty pots but that is simply not how I see the world.

What have you learned so far and what advice can you give others in the same situation? Gibbons.  She is based in the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado.  I first became aware of Marie’s work in The Ceramic Design Book by Lark Books in 1998.  In the past twelve years, I’ve noticed that Marie is an incredibly prolific artist; she is continually creating another series of sculpture.  She has been published in countless books and magazines.  In the interview Marie talks about her, Canada, mexico, india, “…my down time, my mental / creative blocks....” It is hard for me to imagine that these times are lengthy or common; I imagine her working, working, and working.  Thank you, Marie for your taking the time to be interviewed. 

Tell us a little about yourself!

Be involved in the arts community, go to galleries, openings, meet other artists. My advice would be to always look at what you do in a professional and serious manner. To compare and contrast what you are doing to others who are in places that you want to be, and to be honest with yourself of how you measure up and where you need to improve.

Are you a full-time artist?

Yes I am a full time artist and attempt to devote 5-6 hours a day in the studio. However, life does get in the way and there are certainly many times that I cannot devote that daily schedule in the studio, Betapace FOR SALE. Tell us about your Gallery. When and why did you decide to start your business?

 I moved to Denver in 2006 and immediately observed that Denver needed a gallery that is devoted solely to ceramics. We feature 9 monthly one person exhibitions by artists that have not shown in this area. The gallery also represents work by approximately 12 ceramic artists the Plinth Gallery Collection. We provide both an exhibition space as well as an educational venue for the community to bring exceptional work to existing collectors and those interested in acquiring ceramics as new collectors.

What advice would you give to someone starting a creative business?

Follow your muse. Get whatever education you need for the creative aspects and do not neglect the business parts of whatever it is that you are doing, Betapace FOR SALE. Prepare yourself to make many mistakes but understand that this is all part of the educational process necessary for you work smart and avoid working hard. Tell us a little about yourself!

Are you a full-time artist. How did you become one?

As I mentioned above, I am a full-time artist if you count a Mon. - Fri. job as full-time and I'm becoming more full time all the time and I'm hoping that when the little one starts school in the fall that I become an full time artist with overtime. When our child was born I probably worked 3 - 3 1/2 days a week and they usually weren't consecutive days and they were never the same days of the week.

How does your creative process work?

I go into the studio and try to keep what I'm going to do relatively undefined. For instance, today I'm gonna throw or today I'm gonna throw some big bowls. I have and do work toward events and have had commissions but mostly I try not to impose anything that would impede the natural flow of things. Just sit at the wheel and allow what comes to come. I believe that all of us potters know that on some level if it's not going to happen on a particular day, it's not going to happen. This doesn't mean that there aren't times that I have to force things but it's usually counterproductive so I try to keep aware of that. I have tried over the years to use a sketchbook to work through ideas but have to admit that although I love the romantic notion of having and keeping a sketchbook (probably why I keep trying), that I work through the ideas with the clay in front of me, just reacting to what's just happened.

How did you become an artist?

How do you manage being an educator, Father and artist.

I also spend a lot of time on the weekends in the studio and with my family.

I consider myself a full time artist and a full time educator.

How does your creative process work.
My creative process is quite open ended, Pamelor FOR SALE. I try to approach each painting in a different way, so that it does not get formulaic. I don’t want to know where I am going and I want to be surprised when I get there. No preliminary sketches are made; everything is wrestled with right on the canvas. The color, images, and overall compositional structure changes and evolves each time I work. When I finish a piece, which sometimes takes months, the resulting work reveals in a open way it’s history and the struggle of arriving at a cohesive piece. To me, this method of working best mimics the processes that happen in nature.

I applied to exhibit at Funke Fired Arts in Cincinnati, Ohio.  I was lucky enough to get accepted, but I was offered an interesting proposal, to curate a show.  I invited Matt Flint and Mike Olson to show with me.  The three of us are working toward the theme of contextual geography, using the ideas of text texture and conjuring the landscape.  It will a Wyoming show in Ohio!.

Fatblast FOR SALE, I adore Wesley Anderegg’s artwork.  I love his work because it’s hilarious, quirky, and it tells great stories.  I’ve using his work in my classroom, to teach ninth  graders for years.  The assignment is to get the students to tell a story using symbolism.  They really relate to his to his work.  The Anderegg assignment is one of my most successful every year.
